I recently visited the 'Sky Garden' atop the much controversial 'Walkie Talkie' building or 20 Fenchurch Street for its newly opened rooftop garden with accompanying bar and restaurant. After a routine security check, you were free to wander to the top via lift. And it was just that. Free.
The view that greeted you as you reached the top was quite mesmerising and an obvious choice to put the bar. As the sun set and city lit up, it was a truly unbeatable view. Being a hater, I was rather glad that this building itself was out of view from all of my cityscape shots. Despite the shard boasting the highest observation deck, to be free from seeing this building seemed more appealing, as the Shard looked like an object of beauty at night.
Unfortunately for the Sky Garden, it was a vast expanse of open space, more akin to an airport terminal that was for the most part, empty. Expecting crowds and ushers all over the place, there was none. We could freely sit for hours and hours if we wanted. We did not.
After exhausting all four views and observing that the viewing deck itself was barren, we passed the buzzing bar to the elevator back to the ground.
