America's Next Top Model Cycle 20 Episode 5 Recap

So after some drama in the house over phones between Mike and Chris, Chris opens out to everyone about his past and explains the way he acts... then the contestants get taken to their next runway show... which spins. The clothes are designed by Ashton Michael and Kimberly Gordon.

Cory's outfit was very edgy and did well... as did Jourdan and Renee. Mike still struggled and the designer did not like the way Jeremy walked. Nina panicked about her sprained ankle, but managed to get through it without falling.

In the end, the standouts were Phil, Jourdan, Renee and Chris, with Jourdan winning.

Here are the scores for the challenge:

For the photoshoot, the contestants are taken to a trailer park. They get to pick who they get to photograph with based on last week's call out order as follows:

Mike and Alexandra
Mike struggled a lot whilst Alexandra gave a variety of poses.

Jiana and Marvin
Marvin and Jiana had a great set but didn't really work the door in a natural way.

Jourdan and Chris
They look great together and should have pulled out some fantastic shots. Jourdan and Chris both got good critique.

Nina and Phil
Nina looked fantastic in the shoot but Phil was the one that was praised throughout. Both were praised for their picture.

Cory and Renee
Average.

Jeremy, Kanani and Don
Kanani looked fabulous in the shoot. Jeremy is a bit stuck. Don was just there. Jeremy was critiqued for not finding the light. Kanani got mixed critique.

Here are the scores:

Nina, 9,8,10
Phil 9,9,8
Jiana 9, 8,7
Marvin 9,9,7
Cory 8,8,9
Renee 7,7,7
Alexandra 7,8,8
Mike 8,6,8
Jourdan 8,10,9
Chris 9,8,8
Kanani 8,6,9
Jeremy 7,7,6
Don 8,8,9

Well, from this Jeremy look like he's going home... but depends on social media since Jeremy is a fav...

In the end, the first call out goes to...

'Cloud Atlas' Film Review

Based on the Booker nominated book of the same name by David Mitchell, 'Cloud Atlas' is an epic movie spanning six eras, where the past, present and future are all connected, with ones actions leading to another's consequences, effects rippling through time and space.

The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing, South Pacific Ocean, 1849
A story about Adam Ewing, who does business in the Chatham Islands and meets a Moriori slave who hides in his ship and seeks protection. Ewing grows ill and is struggling to survive himself.

Letters from Zedelghem, UK, 1936
A story about Robert Frobisher, a broke musician who becomes a protege to aging composer Vyvyan Ayers and discovers Adam Ewing's journal, but only half of it. As Frobisher starts composing his own piece, 'The Cloud Atlas Sextet', Ayers attempts to take credit for it and threatens Frobisher. Frobisher writes all that he encounters in letters to his lover Sixsmith.

Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery, San Francisco, 1973
A story about Luisa Rey, a journalist, who meets nuclear physicist Sixsmith and begins investigating the conspiracy of a new nuclear power plant. Sixsmith is killed and Luisa finds his letters from Frobisher, leading her to find the recording of 'Cloud Atlas Sextet', which she claims to have heard before. Still looking for evidence to expose the company behind the nuclear plant, she feels she is being followed...

The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish, UK, 2012
A story about Timothy Cavendish, a publisher who receives a draft of Half Lives, The First Luisa Rey Mystery, but ends up in a nursing home after being tricked by his brother taking revenge on him for an old affair. Having accidentally signed his life away, he must try to find a way to escape this prison.

An Orison of Somni-451, Neo-Seoul, 2144
A future story in dystopian Korea, where corporate culture has taken over in a totalitarian state. Somni 451 is a 'fabricant', clone, working in a diner as a server. Interviewed for treason and facing a death sentence, Somni tells the story of her ascension (gaining knowledge) and rebellion, having come into contact with the movie of 'Timothy Cavendish'.

Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin' After, The Big Island, 2321
After 'The Fall', a postapocalyptic event that wiped out most humans, Zachry lives in a primitive village. They worship a goddess called Somni. His village is visited by Meronym, a member of a nearby advanced civilisation still holding onto technology after Zachry witnesses the death of his brother in law and nephew by the head of the Kona tribe. Although suspicious of Meronym's motives, he helps her and takes her to the Cloud Atlas station in exchange for the healing of his sister.

Featuring six stories in six eras and six locations, 'Cloud Atlas' attempts to tell a huge tale, all of which encompass themes of social subversion, injustice, revolution and truth-seeking etc. For viewers that haven't read the book and plunged into the film not knowing anything, the movie plays out in a confused blur that will leave you scratching your heads.

Avril Lavigne 'Rock n Roll' Official Music Video

The video to Avril Lavigne's second single 'Rock N Roll' has been released.

Featuring Danica McKellar, Billy Zane and Sid Wilson, the outrageous video has a comic book style that is fun and not to be taken too seriously, but at times is extremely abstract and slightly crazy... with fighting a bear shark just one of many things Lavigne has to face in this post apocalyptic world.

via Tumblr
Lavigne's fifth studio album will be self titled though a release date is yet to be confirmed, with reports suggesting September, whilst others say November. With two singles out already, this album needs to come SOON!!

Also, the blatant product placement of the Sony Xperia Z is hilariously obvious... but its great cos I have that phone <3 font="" nbsp="">

Check out the music video below:

Fashion Spotlight: Tex Saverio

Indonesian designer Tex Saverio is rising to the spotlight as his extravagant designs are gaining momentum in the media. Having already dressed Lady Gaga, Saverio's latest commission is the iconic wedding dress for Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire.

Inspired by fantasy styles and anime art, his ethereal creations have also been featured in the Hunger Games Capitol Couture webzine. I think his designs are just so unique and extravagant I'm speechless at how he conceives them. Watch out for Saverio!!

'Epic' Film Review

From Blue Sky Studios (creators of Rio and Ice Age) comes Epic, a fascinating tale inside the world of the forest and all its inhabitants. Whilst the trailer reminds me deeply of Studio Ghibli's 'Arrietty', 'Epic' brings is an original and visually stunning movie.

When Mary Katherine (MK)'s mother dies, she moves in with her mad scientist father, Professor Bomba, who lives by the forest, researching little Leafmen he believes exist all around them. As it is near time for the Queen of the forest, Tara, to pick an heir from a bed of buds, Bomba is incredibly busy trying to track the Leafmen, neglecting MK.

The evil within the forest, the Boggans, launch an attack on the Leafmen, preventing the spawn of a forest heir. Just as MK has had enough and decides to leave, she discovers the Leafmen and mysteriously shrinks to their size, witnessing the death of the queen. With the forest in the midst of war, MK must follow the queen's dying instructions to protect the chosen bud and do what she must to make it spawn.

'Now You See Me' Film Review

This was one of my personal most anticipated movies of the Summer. The trailer screams 'Inception' meets 'The Prestige' in a mind bending and slick fashion that though confusing, made you want to join the fun.

Four low key magicians J Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher), Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson) and Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) are brought together by a mysterious person to form a performing group called 'The Four Horsemen'.

In their first of three high profile performances, backed by insurance magnate Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine) they pulled off a bank heist live and distributed the money to the audience. With the assistance of magic debunker Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman), FBI agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) must track them down and expose them before anymore damage is done.

America's Next Top Model Cycle 20 Episode 4 Recap

So Marvin wins best photo and Don's edit makes me think he's going home :P The guys get taught a lesson about chemistry by Tyra and Rob before having to practice in pairs- oh look, Jeremy and Jourdan get paired together...

Then they have to take part in a sexy photo shoot with Rob Evans and Alessandra Ambrosio in their pairs. Phil struggles and looks a mess, Don struggles and Mike struggles at first but seemed to make it work towards the end. All the girls seemed to have done OK with their 'inhaling' move.

And then its time for makeovers. Cory got his head shaved off. Nina gets a Kayla cut so she looks less like Allison. Chris H looks a lot better with his icy blond hair. Phil gets a weave to get a Jesus look.

At panel, Jourdan and Renee's photo isn't great- there isn't too much chemistry imo. Renee is disconnected and Jourdan isn't giving enough oomph. Chlea and Marvin's photo also lacks chemistry with Chlea like she's shying away and Marvin a sexual predator.

Chris H and Jiana's shot is the best so far, Chris is sublime and Jiana looks good, but could have elongated a bit more and arched her back for that extra tension.

Phil and Jeremy's shot isn't great. Phil was told to give more side "booch". Jeremy was told he looked like a primate. Didn't like this shot.

Don and Alexandra has a poor shot. Kelly said that Don looks like he's going to give Alexandra a gun and that Alexandra looked like she took dope before the shoot. Bye bye Don.

Mike and Kanani get a good shot. Mike probably has the best facial expression of the guys and his body is great. Kanani was critiqued for being short.

Nina and Cory's shot also isn't great. Nina looks really sad and Cory isn't really into the picture- he should be cropped out.

The judges scores are:
Jourdan 9,8,8
Renee 7,7,9
Chlea 6,6,6
Marvin 6,6,9 (from Tyra, soo fixing the scores right there)
Jiana 9,7,9
Chris H 6,7,8
Phil 5,6,7
Jeremy 6,6,6
Don 5,5,6
Alexandra 6,7,8
Mike 8,9,10
Kanani 7,7,8
Cory 6,7,8
Nina, 8,8,6

Ok so quite obviously Don is going home as previously predicted... But first call out goes to...

Disney Pixar's 'Monsters University' Film Review

Disney Pixar's offering this Summer is the highly anticipated prequel to Monster's Inc. 'Monsters University' tells of Mike and Sully's days at university before working at Monsters Inc.

Mike has always wanted to be a scarer and upon going to university, studies incredibly hard in order to achieve his dreams, excelling at the theory. When Mike meets Sully, a privileged student who doesn't study but has a natural ability to scare, the two inevitably enters a rivalry. At the final exams, the two push each other to the limit that they break Dean Hardscrabble's record breaking scare capsule, resulting in their elimination from the program.

In order to prove his worth, Mike decides to enter the Scare games with team Oozma Kappa but with one team member short, they reluctantly also accept Sully. The team must learn to work together and set aside their differences in order to win the games so that Mike and Sully can resume their place in the scare program.

'Oz, The Great and Powerful' Film Review

From Disney and the people that brought us Alice in Wonderland and Snow White and the Huntsman comes another fairy tale adaptation, this time focusing on the land of Oz.

Oscar "Oz" (James Franco) is a magician working in Kansas. Chased by the circus strongman after flirting with his wife, Oz flees in his hot air balloon just as a tornado is brewing. With no way of escape, Oz is sucked in but gets taken to the land of Oz, where he meets witch Theodora (Mila Kunis). She tells him of the prophecy regarding the return of the King of Oz, of which she feels he is the one to fulfill.

Theodora's sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz) tempts Oz with the treasure and the throne, which Oz could not refuse and accepts the mission to defeat the Wicked Witch who killed the previous king. But all is not as it seems when the Wicked Witch turns out to be the innocent Glinda (Michelle Williams) who reminds Oz of his love back in Kansas.

Oz must restore the land of Oz by removing the evil with the help of a flying monkey and a porcelain girl.

Sony Xperia Z Smartphone Review

I'm incredibly late jumping on the smartphone bandwagon. I was one of those people who really just used my phone for calling and texting as no mobile phone camera would beat the quality of my DSLR. But with my current phone (Sony Ericsson T707) acting up by randomly switching off, losing text messages and so on, I had no choice but to start the laborious research that precedes the purchase of this new age slab of technology.

As a picky consumer, I like my gadgets to look good. For me, the iPhone 4 was the pinnacle of phone beauty for the past few years but the price tag was not. I ruled out the Galaxy S3/S4 because of its hideous curvature (the S2 was beautiful but now internally outdated). HTC was a contender but was no match for the beauty that was the Xperia Z.

After iterations and iterations of phones released by Sony under the letters of the alphabet, Z was the latest and became the brand's flagship phone.

Cambodia STM Trip 2013

I went on a STM trip to Cambodia from 3-9 August with ELCHK Overseas Mission Dept. Our group of 17 were split into three groups: one went to Kandal, one to Preah Sdach and our group stayed in Toul Kok, Phnom Penh.

Going on the Cambodia mission trip, I really experienced God’s provision, timing and protection. My stay in Hong Kong this summer was mainly to visit relatives and to take a break from studying, without much of a plan. When I first heard about the mission opportunity to Cambodia, it was during my university deadlines and I initially ignored the email. But after praying about it, I made a decision to go even though I didn’t know much about Cambodia, because I have wanted to go on a short term mission in the past few years and because Cambodia is such a different place to Hong Kong or England.

As I missed all the training sessions, I felt rather unequipped and having not met any of my team members, was worried that we would not get along or that I would be left out. Another struggle I faced was during the preparation of the teaching materials for the ‘Advanced English’ class, targeting university students. With no experience in teaching, I was not only worried about what to teach but how.

Although my preparations were lacking, God was ever-present and transformed my worry into thanksgiving. Praise God that our team worked extremely well together and have moments where we explode with laughter. different personalities complimented each other and I believe that this was God’s plan. Praise God for providing students that had a real heart and enthusiasm or learning. I was especially struck by a particular university student called Sarern, who studies English, is a Christian and aspires to go to the province to teach English and spread the word of God. It leads me to think: If the people of Cambodia had the same passion for God as they have for learning, what would it be like?

Part of the trip included visiting missionaries and local ministries that are taking place in Phnom Penh. Jamson and Kitty, a couple who run a student dormitory, spread the gospel by living it out with their daily lives. It was a great reminder that we should be living sacrifices to God and though difficult, their ministry of almost ten years really show their passion and perseverance. Another dormitory ministry we visited, run by a Singapore team, has over fifty students in just three years. This was also the dorm that Sarern is staying at (coincidence? I think not). It is extremely encouraging to see God working in Cambodia and to see his love gradually penetrate the lives of these people.

Returning to the UK and my studies in architecture, Cambodia will remain in my prayers and although we weren’t able to ‘do’ much in these short few days, I really experienced God and am really thankful for everything I was able to see. I believe that He wanted to introduce me to this country and placed everyone who He wanted me to meet. If I get the opportunity to return to Cambodia, it will be because of God’s calling! Keep praying!

America's Next Top Model Cycle 20 Episode 3 Recap

So last time, the contestants were left hanging awaiting to walk in the GUESS runway show. Umm.. from the editing, Chris S is going home... just saying. :P

Opening the show is Chris S and Nina, who stumbles a bit but recovered when she reached ground. Chlea kept hilariously screaming as she's going down. Most of them just stumbled around on the edge of that building so it wasn't much to watch, but Cory remembered to model and Renee managed to keep her composure.

In the end, Renee wins the challenge, but Marvin comes close. Here are the scores:

The photoshoot this week will have an alternative wedding theme.

Jeremy and Jourdan get paired together with a nudist theme. As Jourdan was married and divorced at 18 she struggled to begin with but I think they got a good picture towards the end.

Mike and Alexandra - Shotgun wedding.

Don and Chris- Gay wedding.

Phil- Objectophilia

Don't understand this concept at all... sabotage. Awful.

Nina, Marvin, Bianca- Group Wedding

Kanani and Jiana- lesbian wedding

Cory and Chlea-?

Chris S and Renee- Hip hop Wedding

Overall, it was a pretty messy shoot- did not like the theme and whilst the whole flixel thing is exciting, the way they did it was not... seems really forced.

From the Tyra Mail, it's obvious that more than one person will be eliminated. There are a whopping 16 of them right now!

Alexandra 7,7,8
Mike 6,7,7
Chris S 6,5,6
Renee 5,7,6
Kanani 5,7,7
Jiana 7,9,8
Chlea- 8,7,4 (from Kelly who halved her score because of what she said to her at the shoot)
Phil- 5,7,6
Chris H 8,9,10
Don 8,9,9
Jeremy 8,6,5
Jourdan- 6,7,5
Marvin 9,9,10 (not even that good tbh)
Nina 5,6,7
Bianca 6,7,5

Feel like Marvin is one of the favs right now and just going to get the good scores... but meh... So who gets top marks?

The highest score this week is...

America's Next Top Model Cycle 20 Episode 1 & 2 Recap

Sorry I was away on holiday so wasn't able to catch the premiere of ANTM C20, but now catching up on the first three episodes... will probably be rather quick because we're still warming up to these girls... AND GUYS!

So the semi finalists have to walk in an avant garde masquerade runway show in pairs (guy and girl) and then at the end of the runway kiss each other. Standard poor runway... Nina catches my eye as the awkward one this cycle, liking Jeremy. Alexandra has the big personality (another one?) and Corey will go far, standing out by picking a guy over a girl.

And then it is time for interviews... Ronald- sucky answer bye bye! Many of them have sob stories, it seems... Is Chris H the male Angelea? And then we have Virg, another transgender, but don't think will make far because we've seen it before with Isis now haven't we.

And then they make the first cut.

The rest of the guys and girls do a photo shoot whilst having it projected on the side of a building and will determine the 16 finalists who will compete to be America's Next Top Model. Not much to say about it- Jourdan kind of struggled... meh..

The judges deliberate about the contestants and then Virg decides to go home for health reasons. The group gets taken to a runway for GUESS but only the finalists will be walking the show, and they are...
