'The Big Wedding' Film Review

A large family comes together for the wedding of Missy (Amanda Seyfried) and Alejandro (Ben Barnes) but this isn't just any ordinary family. Alejandro is adopted by Ellie (Diane Keaton) and Don (Robert De Niro) but they're not divorced and Don is dating Bebe (Susan Sarandon), which is just fine if Alejandro's birth mother knew, but she doesn't. For the days leading up to the wedding, Don and Ellie must pretend to still be married.

What's more, Alejandro's sister Lyla (Katherine Heigl) is suffering from marriage and baby issues, whilst virgin brother Jared (Topher Grace) has eyed up Alejandro's sister... not to mention the history between the in laws! Will all the issues get resolved before the big day? Regardless, it will be a wedding to remember.

The first thing to note about this movie is its stellar cast. With comedy queen Katherine Heigl, Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon and Diane Keaton, we thought we were in safe hands. Not quite. None of the cast are given much room to shine, even doe eyed Amanda Seyfried which seems to be in every movie nowadays only gets about 5 minutes of screen time.

Thematically, the family dynamics are at times cliched, ridiculous or plain out stupid. Do family members really slap and punch people without hesitation? The rather unbelievable events aren't positively outrageous, it's just absurd. What's more, Topher Grace and Ben Barnes looks so similar that we'd have thought Heigl was the adopted one!

I was rather bored throughout the whole movie. They even tried to spice things up with a naked woman- nope, didn't work. Neither did the horrendous sex sounds between Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton.

The plot basically consisted of a pre-wedding dinner, a family rehearsal dinner and the wedding itself. Nothing really seemed to have happened in these few days. Yes, some secrets came out, but really, the whole movie consisted of a bunch of people talking, a bit of punching, some sex and more talking. Oh, and a wedding.

The highlight of the movie must have been when Don and Ellie give Alejandro their wedding gift. But apart from this, the rest of the movie was an utter ship wreck. Such a shame, given the potential.

Katherine Heigl- Lyla
Robert De Niro- Don
Diane Keaton- Ellie
Susan Sarandon- Bebe
Amanda Seyfried- Missy
Topher Grace- Jared
Ben Barnes- Alejandro
Robin Williams- Father Monighan

Also stars David Rasche, Ana Ayora and Kyle Bornheimer.

As mentioned above, most of the cast members are only given insubstantial roles that really don't have much development, shallow and unimportant. Even Katherine Heigl couldn't shine, though she looked fantastic throughout.

'The Big Wedding' could have been a great summer hit given the vast amount of summer weddings going on this year, but the lack of real plot, genuine humour and shallow characters really let this film down. The huge cast ensemble was wasted and so was my time. Avoid this one and rewatch some old classics!

  1. Good review. Lord, this movie was awful. I sat through it for awhile and although I didn't hate myself for actually sitting through it all, I wondered what else I could have been doing with my life.
