2013 Hottest Films

2012 was a great year of film with record breaking blockbusters such as 'The Avengers', 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'The Hobbit', but also some cinematic spectables such as 'Cloud Atlas' and 'Life of Pi'.

2013 promises to deliver as well, with more fairytale twists in the form of 'Hansel and Gretel:Witch Hunters' and 'Oz, the great and Powerful'. Despite the Twilight series coming to an end, fans can surely find something to like about Stephanie Meyer's next movie adaptation of 'The Host'.

Summer promises some great animation, with 'Despicable Me 2', 'Monsters University' and 'EPIC'. Records might be broken again this Summer with the release of 'Iron Man 3' and later in the year by the next Hobbit Film 'Smaug's Desolation' and finally, the one we've all been waiting for, the next installment to The Hunger Games, 'Catching Fire'.

Disney Pixar's 'Brave' Film Review

Missed this during its Summer release, I've finally managed to see Pixar's latest offering 'Brave' on DVD. Whilst I've heard mixed reviews about the movie, I was certain Pixar would not disappoint and watched this with an open mind.

Set in the Pixar version of Scotland, the misty mountains and lush forests are the backdrop to the adventure, or should I say, dilemma for princess Merida. Strongwilled and fierce, she is much more interested in archery and exploring than she is in being ladylike as her mother prepares her for betrothal.

As the clans arrive to present their sons to Merida, the princess has a plan to forge her own path, with the help of a witch's curse. But when it doesn't go according to plan, Merida must undo the curse before it is too late.

'The Impossible' Film Trailer Preview

'The Impossible', an upcoming drama about a family's experience of the 2004 South East Asian tsunami disaster.

Inspired by a true story, the movie stars Ewan McGrefor and Naomi Watts as they holiday with their three sons in Thailand, only to be caught up in the tragic disaster. Separated and alone, the strength they hold onto to find each other is moving.

Geared to be a winner during the upcoming awards season, this movie is surely going to be touching and one to watch out for.

The movie will be released in January in the UK. Check out the trailer below:

'Hereafter' Film Review

Lured by the acting finesse of Matt Damon and a somewhat deep mysterious plot witnessed in the trailer, I decided to give this rather obscure and unknown movie a watch.

Marie (Cecile De France), is a French television journalist who experiences life after death in the South East Asia tsunami disaster of 2004 whilst on an assignment. Returning to life with so many questions, she takes a break to explore what might be beyond the living.

Meanwhile, twins Marcus and Jason (Frankie and George Mclaren) live in a rough part of London with a drug addict mother. The two depend on each other and are so close that when Jason is hit by a van and dies, Marcus struggles to continue life without his older brother.

Now where does Matt Damon come in? He plays George Lonegan, a former psychic living in San Francisco who struggles with this 'curse' where he can communicate with the dead once a connection is established with someone close to them that is living.

'Life of Pi' Film Review

Having read the critically acclaimed novel of the same name by Yann Martel, I was eagerly anticipating the film's release when it was announced. Directed by the notorious Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Brokeback Mountain), the movie is already deemed a 'visual masterpiece' and highly tipped to win a few Oscars at the upcoming awards season.

Piscine Patel (Pi for short) grew up in a zoo in India and at a young age is introduced to Hinduism. Curious about other religions, Pi soon finds God in the form of Christ and Allah... but when he truly experiences God is on his epic journey of survival on board a boat with a Bengal Tiger (called Richard Parker) in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Pi's father decides to sell the zoo and move to Canada to make a better life for Pi and his brother Ravi, so taking the animals with them and aboard a Japanese freight ship they go; Pi leaving his first love behind. During a tropical storm, the ship is wrecked and Pi is the sole survivor of the wreck, in a lifeboat with an injured zebra.

After rescuing a mother chimpanzee as well as Richard Parker, a hyena emerges from below the canvas of the boat and Pi finds himself experiencing the realities of the food chain. Amidst this strange predicament, Pi is eager to survive and through determination, strong will and a bit of faith, he discovers how to share a boat with a Bengal Tiger, all the while experiencing the beauty, the amazingness and the treasures of the ocean.

'To The Wonder' Film Trailer Preview

Terrence Malick's new film 'To The Wonder' finally gets a trailer. The film stars Rachel McAdams, Ben Afflect, Olga Kurylenko and Javier Bardem, in what appears to be a romantic drama which will involve undoubtedly a love quadrangle.

Neil (Affleck) and Marina (Kurylenko) meet in Spain but move to Oklahoma to start a life together only for Neil to rekindle with his childhood love Jane (McAdams) and Marina meets fellow exile Father Quintana (Bardem) who is a priest.

From the trailer, 'To The Wonder' definitely looks artistic and not like the typical romantic movie. The film will be released in February (UK). Check out the trailer below:

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' Film Review

The Lord of the Rings trilogy created a whole new cinematic universe, inspired media culture and created some of the most iconic scenes in cinema, not to mention it won 17 Academy Awards and broke Box Office records, so when the idea came for them to make J.R.R Tolkien's prequel 'The Hobbit', who could say no?

Split into three films (originally two), each over two hours long, one might ask 'HOW?'- and the answer is that the film-makers decided to stretch it out to make more money. Not to worry, fans of the franchise will receive a lot of bonus side story, history and even more of Middle Earth, all adapted from Tolkien's works.

The movie opens with an old Bilbo Baggins writing his story about his adventures and recalling the ancient thriving Dwarven kingdom of Erebor, a city of gold, which was then taken siege by fire dragon Smaug, driving the dwarves into exile which is interrupted by Frodo (a pleasant cameo by Elijah Wood).

Whilst blowing smoke rings, Bilbo recalls the night his life changed forever.

Gossip Girl Season 6 Episode 10 (Series Finale) Recap

So it's finally over. After 6 seasons and 121 episodes, this is it. Whilst the show had it's up and downs, this season was pretty much a wreck, even Georgina's schemes seemed plain to what she once was, but undeniably, the ending was fantastic.

Liquid Splash Photography by Markus Reugel

Photographer Markus Reugel has been experimenting with water splashes and high speed photography and his recent results are no short of extraordinary.

Reugel takes it to the next level with his dynamic forms which I have no way of perceiving how it is executed, but along with the colour and light, makes for wonderful organic shapes.

I'm definitely excited to see more from the photographer, and if you like this you should definitely check out Shinichi Maruyama's similar work!

Ceramic Christmas Tree by Mooz

With just 10 days to go until Christmas, here is a beautiful modern design in Brussels, Belgium of a tree made of ceramic plates and cups, donated by local residents. The minimal and modern tree is designed by Mooz, called the 'Taste Tree' and definitely stands out against the urban backdrop of the European city.

Taylor Swift 'I Knew You Were Trouble' Official Music Video

Taylor Swift's music video for her latest single 'I Knew You Were Trouble' has been released. Her most cinematic video of all time, the six minute video starts with Swift telling the story, before the music finally begins, which unfortunately breaks the edge and mystery that has been built up.

Despite the sudden change of tone, the cinematography builds up once again and I love the fast and choppy footage, directed by Anthony Mandler. Taylor Swift's dark transformation takes a while to get used to but works for the video extremely well and there are some standout moments.

This is definitely the best video from the 'Red' era so far, check it out below:

'Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides' Film Review

I have put off seeing this movie for a long time as I thought it was just a ploy to make more money and given that my favourite characters Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) will not be returning, I saw no reason to continue apart from wanting to know just what they manage to bring that is new.

In 'On Stranger Tides', Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is trying to find the fountain of youth, but so are the Spanish, which sparks the British to follow, led by Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). When Jack meets previous love Angelica Teach (Penelope Cruz), he discovers that she too is looking for the fountain of youth, with her father, the infamous Blackbeard (Ian McShane).

Racing against everyone else, Jack must use his charm admist the competition in a story full of passion and vengeance.

'How You Remind Me' Cover by Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne's cover of Nickelback's 'How You Remind Me' for the upcoming 'One Piece' film has been released. This is the first time a non-Japanese singer has provided the soundtrack for an anime film, which is appropriate given her popularity in Japan.

Lavigne puts her own twist on the rock song, which has more emotion, mystery and a slight ballad feel to it. Having not heard new music from the Canadian pop princess since her record 'Goodbye Lullaby' in 2011, it is great to hear something new even if it is a cover!

Her new album is finished though no news on its release or new single has been out yet, so for now, listen to 'How You Remind Me' below:

'Don't You Worry Child' Cover by Roxanne Emery

Roxanne Emery has been doing covers every week for a few weeks now and the one which stood out and I'm completely in love with is her cover of Swedish House Mafia's 'Don't You Worry Child'.

Taking the dance/club smash and making it her own with an emotional acoustic quality, it is truly breathtaking! I have been listening to this on repeat for a while, bugging my housemates, but it's sooo good!

Check out the video below and you can now also buy the cover on iTunes HERE

'The Help' Film Review

I finally got around to watching 'The Help' last night, a movie based on the bestselling novel by Kathryn Stockett. Nominated for four Oscars (Best Picture, Best Leading Actress and two Best Supporting Actress nominations), it was no surprise that this was an outstanding film.

Middle aged black maid Aibeleen Clark (Viola Davis) has been raising white children in Mississippi for most of her life. When approached by upcoming writer Skeeter (Emma Stone), who has just returned from college and is interested in writing a piece from the Black maid's perspective, she is reluctant due to the rules black people must abide by during the early 1960s.

But when Aibeleen witnesses the poor treatment of her friend Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) and a spark  of courage during church, she decides to speak out and tell her story, and so does Minny.

The pain, the trials and the injustice are heartbreaking but Skeeter is determined to publish the truth and hope for change. However, as the civil rights movement reaches a peak and violence begins to erupt, the three are endangered and question whether to continue or not.

Christmas Lights II

Following the recent popularity of my 'Christmas Lights' post written three years ago, I decided to do another, showcasing more brilliant light displays full of festive spirit. With less than 20 days to go, it really is time to get into that christmassy mood. Which one of these is your favourite?

'Jack Reacher' Film Trailer Preview

Tom Cruise is back in another action thriller 'Jack Reacher' based on the novels by Lee Child.

The movie sees Tom Cruise play Jack Reacher, who investigates a case after five random people were shot. He's ruthless and does not abide by law. With humour and flair, there seems to be quite an edge to this character.

The film also stars Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog.

I'm sure this movie will spark greater interest in continuing the Mission Impossible franchise after MI4: Ghost Protocol was such a success and Tom Cruise apparently still has it.

'Jack Reacher' will be out Boxing Day. Check out the trailer below:

Ice: Portraits of Vanishing Glaciers by James Balog

James Balog has surveyed and documented glaciers all over the world and produced a series of stunning photographs revealing the beauty as well as the harsh reality that we are facing with our retreating ice fields.

Glaciers are not only beautiful things but are an essential component in locking water as ice as well as reflecting sunlight. Hopefully these shots will instill an awe and awareness to protecting our environment.

Scattered Crowd by William Forsythe

"Thousand of white balloons, suspended in a billowing wash of sound; an air- borne landscape of relationship, of distance, of humans and emptiness, of coalescence and decision. In the gorgeous, breathless space that is choreographer William Forsythe's "Scattered Crowd", the viewer inhabits and alters, through their stillness or speed, their sense of proportion and time, the configurations that make up this constantly shifting, ecstatic world."

The installation created by William Forsythe is mesmerising and a real sense of awe. The impermanence and light quality to it redefines the solid space into something ethereal.

Brittani Kline for Disowned Clothing

Brittani Kline appears in a series of shots for Disowned clothing. The winner of Cycle 16 of America's Next Top Model looks stunning in this artistic shoot which looks like stills from an arty movie but showcases Kline in her natural state.

Sophie Sumner in Beauty in Vogue (2012)

Sorry for the late post but I've just found Sophie Sumner's 'Beauty in Vogue' spread which we saw being shot on the last episode of cycle 18. Shot by Jez Smith, the spread was shot in Macau and features Sumner's raw natural beaty. I wish her pink hair was slightly more saturated, at least a hint more for a pop of colour, but nonetheless it looks great.

Soap Bubble Planets by Jason Tozer

Photographer Jason Tozer creates fascinating imagery resembling other worldly planets by just using soap bubbles and a camera. With a reflective dome of perspex, the surface of the bubble is lit and the swirls/patterns are created by blowing onto it.

The results are beautiful and mystifying. I'd love to see more of them!

Kelly Clarkson 'Greatest Hits-Chapter One' Album Review

After five hit albums, the most successful American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson releases her first greatest hits album. With 9 US Top 10 hits (3 of which were No 1s) and all her albums gaining top 3 spots, this is adequately named 'Chapter One', with hopefully many more albums of great tracks to come.

I'm personally not a fan of the album cover- but features almost a recreation of her trademark 'Breakaway' album face and simply styling. I guess it's her most iconic picture so it is appropriate.

The album features 17 tracks, 4 of which are new.

1. Since U Been Gone
2. My Life Would Suck Without You
3. Miss Independent
5. Behind These Hazel Eyes
6. Because of You
7. Never Again
8. Already Gone
10. Breakaway
11. Don't You Wanna Stay (ft. Jason Aldean)
12. Walk Away
13. Catch My Breath
15. Don't Rush
16. A Moment Like This
17. I'll be Home for Christmas

The album starts with Kelly's smash hit 'Since U Been Gone' which is also my favourite song of hers EVER, followed by other explosive pop rock tracks such as 'My Life Would Suck Without You' and 'Behind These Hazel Eyes'.

Softer tracks 'Because of You', 'Already Gone' and 'Breakaway' float in the middle in limbo, but remind us that behind the shouty power-vocals of Clarkson, there is a soft side- and it's musically splendid.

'To The Power Of' Exhibition by Jen Stark

Jen Stark, one of my favourite artists, has a new exhibition in LA titled 'To The Power Of', where she captures our eye once again with colourful paper sculptures. This time, there is an element of playing with scale with her 'micro' series, but the much loved rainbow cut sculptures remain.

However, Stark revealed a new piece called 'Prismatic Radiation' where a single piece of card is cut into a pattern, overlayed on a painted surface, creating a refreshing exploration into other methods. I reallly wish I could see her work in person!! Someone buy me a ticket to LA? :D

'Now You See Me' Film Trailer Preview

The trailer to upcoming illusionist heist movie 'Now You See Me' has been released.

With an all star cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Mark Ruffalo, the film sees magicians rob banks during their show and funnels it into the audience's bank accounts.

Detective played by Mark Ruffalo is determined to stop them before their biggest heist yet.

Sounds interesting? Certainly. The film reminds me of 'The Prestige' with some of their elements but has the slick nature of an Oceans' movie. The film will be out Summer 2013. Check out the trailer below:

America's Next Top Model Cycle 19 Episode 12 (FINALE) Recap

Has it been a cycle already? It's the finale of cycle 19 and one of the remaining three girls will be crowned America's Next Top Model. Will it be Laura? Leila? or Kiara?

This episode starts with the strangest change of tone ever where Tyra introduces the runway finale and the haunted house... it has that same feel as Cycle 17's live first panel. :/ it's strange showing the finale runway before everything else that happens?

Oh wait... and now we cut to the girls doing their Nine West shoot... urgh. So the girls are in the colourful streets of Jamaica in colourful clothes, wearing Nine West heels. Laura's first and looks stunning btw, only for her shoot to be sabotaged by Kelly Cutrone and Jez Smith who have a verbal war in the middle of her shoot. It was pretty hilarious and probably done for more drama anyway but still, good entertainment- you can always rely on Kelly to stir things up on set!

Leila doesn't do very well on her shoot- it's definitely more commercial and so she is quite awkward and there isn't much variety in her posing.

Kiara doesn't do much in her shoot either and receives negative critique from Johnny, BUT BUT BUT I have a feeling the editing is playing with us, so right now, I think either Laura or Kiara will win. Hehehe.

Back at the fashion show, the girls look stunning in Amato haute couture gowns. But before we see them walk, we have to 'take a look' at their Nylon photo shoot as well.

Laura looked great, Kiara was ok and Leila was playful (most Nylon according to the director). They then get a surprise visit from their family members.

Now it's time for the finale runway. I can't say it enough but the dresses do look AMAZING!!!

Laura looked great but her walk seemed stumpy and slow- maybe cos she can't see the runway!!

Kiara probably had the best runway walk but her face is covered too much.

Leila also looked great but fell during her entrance on the steps which broke her and her walk was awful (not that it was great to begin with but still...) and on her way off, she also tumbled... OUCH.

Kelly looked disgusted in the audience and I'm sure she'll rip into her at panel.

Brittany also looked great in her dress.

Both Laura and Kiara looked great in the second look but WOW LEILA- her outfit and styling was phenomenal. She also didn't fall this time around which was good :)

SERIOUSLY STUNNING. That is the look of a real top model at the end of the runway.

At panel, the judges will decide who will be the winner but the average of the previous scores will 'help' that decision.

Kiara was praised for her runway walk whilst the other two had critiques. Kelly was angry at Leila and said she would not cast her in a show.

Leila's Nine West shot was deemed the best, followed by Laura. The judges will be giving the girls a score based on the whole competition, added to the other score averages to determine this cycle's winner.

I seriously have no idea who will win. Nylon loves Leila, who also has the best Ninewest ad. Those are the 'real' campaigns that are going to be published, and she rocked them both. She doesn't have a great runway, but she doesn't need to- she can be a print model or whatever.

Kiara has a strong runway walk and one or two good pictures but I don't think she should win, though she's been given the improvement edit and could potentially win since she's basically Angelea 2.0

And as for Laura, she's been so strong at the beginning and getting so many great pictures but slipped towards the end, and her runway was average. But she is definitely more well rounded than the other two.

Who will win?
