ROCA London Gallery by Zaha Hadid Architects

“Using a formal language derived from the movement of water, the Roca London Gallery has been eroded and polished by fluidity; generating a sequence of dynamic spaces carved from this fascinating interplay between architecture and nature.” Zaha Hadid.

The modern space works well and resembles a cave eroded by water with the intricate forms being 'rock formations'. This is definitely a place I'm looking forward to visiting when I'm back in London!

'Life In a Day' Film Review

I watched 'Life In a Day' last night on YouTube and it really was an interesting project. Documenting the happenings of people all over the world on July 24, 2010 through 4,500 hours of submitted video, the film showcases the highs and lows of everyday life.

Whilst other movies are scripted, highly budgeted and well acted, the mundane occurrences of everyday life has a rhythm and a tune which is common. The daily routine was beautifully shown as a series of short clips, the sounds, the sights... I loved the emphasis on the simple tasks and just revealing the beauty of such small details.

The film also managed to show the larger 'life changing' events that include proposals, marriages, pregnancies, birth... which is another thing which is miraculous. However, it wasn't scared to expose the gruesome realities that also take place on a daily basis: the harsh life of the third world, the slaughtering of a cow (I had to skip past that bit) and illness. I was particularly moved by the boy who had to shine shoes- his purity was touching.

In this way, the film took us on a journey both physically (taking us around the world through a Korean who have been travelling by bicycle for over 10 years) and emotionally. The thrills of skydiving to the terror of a stampede.
Despite the at times harrowing sights of reality, the film leaves us with a bright message, one that connects us all in the world. Even though it was just a normal day and that we may not have experienced something drastic that day, someone else has gone through the same thing, someone else has had an amazing day, or a poor one... the feeling that someone somewhere is just the same as you but in a different culture, background, circumstance...

Having seen the film, I feel and experience the world in a slightly different way. The sights, sounds and smells that come with the mundane activities of life become exciting, a rhythm, a beat of life... one to enjoy. Everyday.

Keira Knightley at the 'A Dangerous Method' Premiere (London Film Festival)

Keira Knightley attended the premiere of her latest film 'A Dangerous Method' at the start of the week for the London Film Festival. Wearing a Roksanda Ilincic crossover dress, she walked the red carpet with co-stars Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen.

In the film she stars as a psychopath who comes between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. The film has received a lot of hype over the past year and was received positively at the Venice Film Festival, as well as the Toronto Film Festival, both of which Keira attended.

Scarlett Johansson in S Moda Magazine (Oct 2011)

Scarlett Johansson covers the October Issue of Spanish Magazine S Moda. In the magazine, she talks about appearance pressures in Hollywood, how she is an independent woman and on young people claiming their right to vote.
She is currently filming a sci-fi thriller 'Under the Skin' in which she plays an alien luring men to feed her species. She looks stunning in the first set pictures and I can't wait for the film to be released... sounds... delicious!

America's Next Top Model Cycle 17 (All Stars) Episode 7 Recap

This episode was the one with the awesome gif of Alexandria showing some attitude with her conflict with Bianca. Hopefully her controlling aggressive self from Cycle 16 comes back!

The girls get taken to the Roosevelt Hotel and their challenge is to create their own signature fragrance.

Lisa- Neon
Laura- Love
Dominique- Survivor
Shannon- Smitten
Angelea- Angelea
Allison- Honey Blood
Kayla- Free
Bianca- Candid
Alexandria- Diamondnatrix

I thought a lot of the names were boring and just the words given to them before. I liked Lisa's name for Neon and Allison's 'Honey Blood', though 'Blood Honey' would've sounded better personally. :)

The girls will be promoting their perfume at an event in the evening where their fragrance will be infused into a shower/shampoo gel thing and they will be selling it in a bath tub at different stations. Weird. Their fans will also score them and the girl with the highest score will be safe from elimination. AGAIN? I really don't think it's fair they keep doing this to warp judging... we'll see.

Bianca does not want to get in the bathtub as she thinks it's unmodelesque and that 'real' models don't do that sort of thing, listing Tyra and Beyonce as examples. Other girls like Lisa went crazy in the tub and even Nigel himself got into the tub! Eva (winner of Cycle 3) also interviewed them. Briefly.

[Beyonce in a bathtub]
In the end, Lisa wins the challenge, and will be safe this week. The winner of cycle 17 will have their fragrance released nationwide.

For their photo shoot this week, the girls will be portrayed as 'Nene' and 'Snooki' and riding on the back on a motorcycle for a night shoot.

Lisa got the best feedback from Jay and Allison did a good job. Dominique was praised for taking risks. Bianca, Alexandria and Shannon got critiqued. Bianca especially ordered pickles to impersonate Snooki but her shoot became too phallic and graphic. She also didn't let any of the girls have one even though Allison just wanted one to eat :3 aww

Getting Tyra Mail about panel, the girls predict that it will be a double elimination either this week or next week and that they might eliminate one 'Snooki' and one 'Nene'.

Most of the girls get good feedback. Nigel brought up Bianca's unwillingness to participate in the bathtub challenge and Bianca repeats what she said, this time adding she hasn't seen Rihanna in a bathtub.

[Rihanna in a Bathtub]
Tyra goes all scary and tells her 'you're not Beyonce', 'if I were you, I'd get in the bathtub and try to win'. Bianca's probably going home for this outburst. But I did like her photo it's one of her best this cycle, minus the pickle- they should've photoshopped it out, they're so 'good' at photoshop.

Alexandria was praised for giving attitude and going over the top. Tyra called the shoot more caricature than high fashion. Lisa was praised for showing her bone structure- I thought this was her best photo this whole cycle- she looked like Eva Mendes.

I predict Lisa will be first called both for best photo and for immunity and the bottom three to be Bianca, Shannon and Kayla, with Bianca and Kayla going home.

Tyra reveals that it WILL be a double elimination as there are nine girls and Tyra only has SEVEN photos in her hands. *DUN DUN DUN!*

The first girl called is...

'Inside' 'Outside' by Lyken

Lyken is a Scottish artist and music producer. His graffiti work (outside) can be seen all over Britain, but he also does work on canvas (inside) and his colourful pieces alongside his electro music make his exhibitions more of a performance and definitely makes you see his work in a different way.

His pieces are inspired by the universe and cosmos to cells and biology/bacteria. In this way, his pieces are very lively and there is great movement.

Kelly Clarkson 'Stronger' Deluxe Edition Album Review

'Stronger' is Kelly's fifth studio album. Her last record 'All I Ever Wanted' generated the smash hit 'My Life would suck without you' which broke Billboard history by being the single with the biggest leap to #1 from #97. Could this album top that?

The album cover is a large black and white close up of Kelly with a gold filter which I personally don't like. The gold chain looks really out of place and this looks more like an R n B cover which doesn't positively reflect her music. She looks great in the photo but the composition is a bit strange.

There are 17 songs on the deluxe version:

1. Mr. Know It All 4/5
Lead single from 'Stronger', 'Mr Know It All' is a catchy song which many have drawn resemblance to Pink's husky voice and Bruno Mar's 'Just the way you are'. I like the angsty attitude she presents here and hopefully carries through to the rest of the album.

2. What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger) 5/5
One of the best songs off the album and perhaps has the most direct link to the title, 'What Doesn't Kill You' is an infectious song that you will sing along to or shout along to in an explosive chorus you just can't get out of your head. Definitely single worthy- and potentially a smash hit.

Charice Pempengco 'Infinity' Album Review

'Infinity' is Charice Pempengco's second album. Having really enjoyed her previous album, I eagerly awaited this release, previously tentatively called 'Louder', one of the songs on her album.

If you've ever paid attention to the album/single covers of Charice, you notice that they're very simple, colour co-ordinated portraits and I love that she's kept the style here for her second album. Contrasting to her first album's extremely brightly coloured covers, 'Infinity' opts for a classic black which is nice and edgy, perhaps reflecting a darker side to Charice and the music on the album?

The album contains 11 new tracks:

1. Louder 4/5
A very upbeat and catchy song, 'Louder' sounds like something from her last album 'Charice' which makes a nice lead into this album. The beat is extremely addictive and definitely makes you want to sing and dance to it!

2. New World 4.5/5
As a soundtrack song for the English version of Final Fantasy XIII-2, 'New World' is an ethereal piece that takes you to a different world. Whilst it is very typical in musical style of a Japanese game theme song, it is still very listenable and has some depth to it. Similar to Jyongri's 'Lullaby for You' from game 'The world ends with you'.

Disney's 'Treasure Planet' Film Review

I have never watched 'Treasure Planet' before until yesterday as my friend had it on DVD and thought, why not! and it turned out to be much better than expected!

Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island', 'Treasure Planet' takes the classic tale to an intergalactic level that is both thrilling and heartwarming. Jim Hawkins has always read about Treasure Planet and when a mysterious treasure map lands in his hands, he grabs the opportunity to go on a once in a lifetime space voyage in hopes of claiming the treasure of the universe and to make his mother proud. Little did he know, the crew on board have their eyes on the treasure too...

Noyack Creek by Bates Masi Architects

"The client, a New York actor, sought a retreat for relaxation and casual entertaining on a restrictive narrow lot fronting the tidal estuary of Noyack Creek. The house became a study in architectural theatre: a series of spaces in a carefully scripted sequence that subtly reflect his professional life.

The path begins at the front door where perforated privacy screens slide apart like a curtain, revealing the loft-like living and dining spaces. The direction of the deck boards that make up the flooring is altered to demarcate the path through the space, emerging seamlessly to an exterior waterside deck. A broad stair to the second level, parallel with an interior stair along a glazed wall, acts as tiered seating for entertaining and looking at the water view beyond. Beneath the stair, hidden backstage for maximum privacy, the guest room shares the water view through a nearly hidden sliding door. Guests emerge as if through a trap door.
Continuing up the stair to the second floor, the final destination is the master suite and balcony. The master bedroom is connected to the bath by a bridge overlooking the public spaces below which are lit by the glazed stair wall. Lined with a guardrail of stainless steel cables recalling a fly loft and catwalk, the path culminates in the master bedroom with its wall of glazing overlooking the water.

Windows throughout the house are carefully placed to provide the maximum daylight and water views while maintaining privacy from the nearby neighbors and street. The siding system is manipulated for varying degrees of privacy as well. Comprised of Skatelite, a natural resin panel typically used in skateboard ramps, the siding is water-jet cut with tight joints in areas demanding privacy and loosely spaced in other areas to admit light and air. The texture and color of the siding, in keeping with the budget of the house, reference a black box theatre.

In the end, a house that could have been limited by its small site and budget was elevated by its conception as a stage for memorable experiences."
Via Bates Masi Architects.

There is something quite beautiful about this modern home. I love the crisp lines and contrast in colour and materiality. One of my favourite features is the mirrored internal and external staircase. The composition of glass and wood in an open plan layout is astonishing when lit up by natural light.

Jaclyn Poole by Emily Soto (Oct 2011)

Jaclyn Poole has appeared in test shots by Emily Soto, looking so sweet, innocent and beautiful in this set of images. Whilst it is a tad 'model 101', she is absolutely stunning and reminds us why we love her. Just check out her ANTM Portfolio from Cycle 16

The setting and the colours in these shots are so beautiful, I wish the photographer would've just got her to stroll through the grass in a more natural and less posed way.

America's Next Top Model Cycle 17 (All Stars) Episode 6 Recap

The girls get taken to Long beach. They are divided into two teams to play flag football. Surprise! The  eliminated girls are brought back to play with them... so Brittany, Isis, Sheena and Camille can once again grace our screens. Great. =.= They also brought some NFL players to help them, two for each team. The winning team will get £5000 to split between the two NFL players on their team's charity.

Red Team- Shannon, Kayla, Alexandria, Lisa, Dominique
Blue Team- Bre, Bianca, Allison, Angelea, Laura

Not only do they have to play ball, when their name is called, they have to strike a pose for a photographer. The girl with the best photo will win jewellery and a campaign on Tyra's website.

Some of the girls take out their steam on the beach, with Bianca tackling Lisa like crazy. The photo challenge aspect was a bit forced and cheesy and personally didn't show anything about modelling ability. Kayla wins the challenge. Meh.

For the photo shoot, the girls will be posing in pairs alongside supermodel Coco Rocha, in a 'catfight' scenario that is supposed to be dynamic.

Bianca and Shannon
I thought they would be more aggressive but they hid their previous differences for the photo. Coco looked amazing and her facial expressions are so dynamic and different- outshines both definitely.

Allison and Kayla
I loved Allison's styling here but she kind of struggled. Jay called their shoot 'embarassing'. Allison makes the cutest face in the confessional about the shoot..

Laura and Angelea
Angelea struggled to begin with and started crying halfway through but her later shots were better. Laura had to jump off a chair onto a crash mat... :P

Alexandria and Bre
Bre was crazy in the shoot and made Coco 'forget how to pose'. Alexandria was just on the floor- her face was quite dramatic but reads more satire than fashion.

Dominique and Lisa
Dominique looks stunning and Lisa was just crazy- I liked her facial expressions though a bit strong... Jay thought the pair with Coco were the best of the day.

At panel, did you notice how amazing Coco looked? Sooo stunning.

Bianca and Shannon
Bianca was praised; Tyra compared her to a preying Mantis. Leon thought Shannon's legs were weak.

Allison and Kayla
Allison and Kayla both got good critique. Coco was surprised this shot came about given how Allison didn't seem to know what she was doing. I personally thought a promo shot was better than this one.

[Final Shot]
[Promo Shot]

Laura and Angelea
Angelea was praised for her facial expressions. Coco brought up her breakdown and called her professional. It wouldn't be professional to cry AT ALL!! Laura was critiqued for having an unmodelesque body- SHE WAS made to jump off a chair!

Alexandria and Bre
Both Alexandria and Bre were critiqued. Tyra did not like Alexandria's face and called her a 'reality contestant' over model, though Andre thought she was in control and praised her. Coco told the judges that Bre went over the top and Nigel thought it was 'slapstick'.

Dominique and Lisa
Both the girls were praised- Dominique looked great and Lisa's pose worked this time around. I did not like Lisa pulling at Coco's crotch though haha...

At deliberation, Nigel question's Kayla's pose thinking it's a bit static. Tyra again says that Allison's picture could be in Italian Vogue (JUST PUT HER THERE ALREADY!)!

Dominique, Lisa, Angelea and Bianca have a shot at FCO with Bre and Alexandria potential candidates to go home... but who stays and who goes?

In the end, first call out goes to...

Ringer Season 1 Episode 6 Recap

Henry cleans up the blood stains and the broken vase in his house and bins them. Siobhan, upon being unable to reach Gemma, goes to her house and Henry invites her in, questioning her about Gemma. She tells him she does not know where she is and they accuse each other of killing her.

Juliet starts her first day at public school and hands over her remaining stash of drugs to Siobhan. Siobhan struggles to dispose it and contacts Charlie, the guy at NA who wants to be her sponsor. He disposes it for her.

Henry reaches Siobhan again and tells her the police cannot know he cleaned up the mess or it would link to him and he has motive, having just contacted his divorce lawyer and their affair would also be exposed. Siobhan agrees to help him.

Meanwhile, Malcolm, held by the crime Lord hunting Bridget down, gives in and says he would tell them where Bridget is. When agent Machado comes with a warrant, Malcolm is gone.

At school, Juliet is bullied by punk girl Terra (?) and ends up in a fight with her where the principal believes Juliet started the fight, but her new teacher defends her.

Henry is brought in for questioning and was released when they found fingerprints on the broken vase belonging to Bridget Kelly. Agent Machado rings Siobhan and asks if she knew why Bridget would have anything against Gemma and that they would be in contact very soon.

The final sequence and another shocking cliffhanger is that real-Siobhan receives a call telling her that Gemma has been dealt with...

I still don't know what real-Siobhan is looking to do but I have a feeling she wants to be with Henry now that she has found out she is pregnant and is killing off Gemma and Andrew so she could be with him like she 'joked' eight months ago.

No idea if Malcolm really did tell the crime boss where Bridget is but we know he's missing.

I thought this episode was particularly strong as it touched upon all the areas and all the characters and hopefully things will become clearer.

Next week sees Siobhan having to reveal some of her secrets to Andrew as Agent Machado closes in on her and Malcolm. Unfortunately this will be in 2 weeks time due so some silly hiatus.

'Water For Elephants' DVD Film Review

I was intrigued at watching this movie after I saw the trailer; I like dramatic films like this and it kind of reminded me of 'Australia'. The film is adapted from the book of the same name by Sara Gruen.

The cover for  the DVD is pretty dramatic and does sum up the key elements of the movie. The colours are beautiful and represents the time period of which it is set.

Jacob (Robert Pattinson), after losing his parents to a car crash and subsequently everything else, comes across a travelling circus of the Benzini Brothers. Working for them as their vet, he soon rises in the ranks and becomes August (Christoph Waltz)'s right hand man. Obtaining an elephant Rosie for a new act, August assigns Jacob to train it as their star attraction, with August's wife Marlena (Reese Witherspoon). But the pair soon fall in love and must avoid the wrath of August.

'All We Need' - Rachael Lampa Music Album Review

Rachael Lampa's fourth studio album 'All We Need' was one of my birthday presents this year from my lovely sister :3

The cover is a beautiful close up of Rachael, which is a step up from her previous album covers; this is one of my favourite covers of hers.

Featuring a song from last EP album 'Human', and an updated version of 'Live For You' from the album of the same name, 'All We Need' contains 12 tracks in total, 10 of which are new:

1. All We Need 4/5
2. Remedy 4.5/5
3. Saviour's Face 4/5
4. Beauty's Just a Word 5/5
5. No Escape 3.5/5
6. Run To You 4.5/5
7. Elevate 4/5
8. My One and Only 4/5
9. Feel 5/5
10.Uncharted Territory 3.5/5
11. Human 3/5
12. Live For You (2011) 4/5
13. Avalanche (Bonus) 5/5

The album as a whole contains a range of songs of different tempo and as a whole, gives variety yet remains consistent in style and meaning. Some of the songs are also extremely catchy (Remedy, All We Need, Saviour's Face, My One And Only) though not void of meaning.

Cloud Cities by Tomás Saraceno

Tomás Saraceno, it seems, is fascinated by the idea of flight, clouds and floating judging from his work. This particular exhibition called 'Cloud Cities' in Berlin is no exception. The installation invites people to enter these biospheres (suspended only be wire cables) and experience the sensation of 'walking on air'. His work also explores how people interact and change the environment as someone else's interaction will affect your movement and changes to this environment will be sensed.

This is such an interesting installation I really wish I could be there to experience it.
