Robin Nest- Baby Robins 2010/2011

We've had robins in the past, and today, I discovered a new nest... with an adult robin inside incubating the eggs... so I hope to document the hatching of the eggs and the growth of the robins through photography... I'm not going to go often- do not want to disturb their natural environment... but will probably go weekly...

I will constantly update this blog post so watch this space.

14/05/10- Discovered Robin Nest. Adult Robin incubating eggs?

17/05/10- Adult robin still in the nest looking cute.

25/05/10- Adult robin in nest. I can confirm that there are currently NO eggs... but the robin is perhaps pregnant.

13/04/11- Discovered Adult robin returned to nest (hadn't seen him/herfor a while)! Flying in and out with worms- babies? :D

26/04/11- Found three baby robins in the nest!!!

30/04/11- Two robins had gone, one left in garage fluttering away, not the strongest flyer, watched it as it left and reunited with mother and father. :D Bye bye Robins! See you again next year?

OK So this poll came up on Facebook asking the solution to 6÷2(1+2)=?, whether it is 1 or 9. I was quite confused at this for a while but then decided it was 1, despite the majority thinking it is 9. My method was the following~

Surely there is nothing wrong with that, but I was then told that I could not replace the division sign with a fraction bar (WHAT?). In which case, I would still multiply out the brackets first to obtain 6/6=1.

After an hour or so wasted on Facebook debating this, I have come to the conclusion that there is no conclusion to this and there will always be people arguing for 1 or 9. I understand the rationale behind why people say it is 9 but I personally still think it's one, given that's how I've done maths all my life and I will be distraught if I have to accept that maths has lied to me, which will no doubt confuse me every time I see divisions and brackets.

Either way, it's all trivial. We make theese symbols called numbers and expect people to work with these rules that people have created- these rules change and adapt over time and whatever's more widely accepted seems to be the 'correct' one. I mean what makes 3, 3. Just because someone decided this symbol represents 3 things?

Whilst maths can be extremely useful for many daily activities, wasting any more time debating this sum is pointless and I my stance is that whoever created this is just pure evil and by causing many people to waste their time on it, should be punished.

I have also come to the realisation that I hate maths even more. #TEAM1

Hand Photography : Mirrored Hands

Under a week till my art exam, so I thought I'd start sharing some work I've been doing. I completed a set of photos for my art project where I reflected a hand in a mirror, distorting what was ordinary into something abstract and alien.

I really like the simplicity and how clinical the shots are. The movement of the fingers under reflection was really quite mesmerising and at times scary, but reveals the stunning flexibility and nimbleness of our limbs.

Check out the rest of the shots below:

The Royal Wedding

So today's the day the whole world has been waiting for- the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, giving us this four day weekend (woo!) It was a beautiful ceremony, attended by Sir Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham, David Cameron and many other foreign leaders and royals.

Westminster Abbey was so beautiful for the ceremony, the shots from above was really artistic. I loved the trees along the aisle which brought in a fresh modern take (flowers are so overrated) and the red carpet was very appropriate.

Wearing Sarah Burton (Alexander McQueen), Kate Middleton looked stunning in that gown (loved the view from above of her train in a perfect circle) with laced sleeves.

The exchange of vows and the actual interesting part of the ceremony was over quickly- William was rather rushed, whilst Kate spoke a little too softly, before being ushered to sit down and watch as hymns are sung and a message is spoken. During this time, William looked rather sleepy and a tad bored, whilst Kate held her composure and looked pleased. A quick shot of William from behind revealed his awfully thin head of hair which BBC quickly cut to another scene.

After the ceremony, the royal procession was beautifully done with the waving far more elegant by Kate (her waving was crazy when she arrived) and she smiled sweetly all the way. William looks good with the hat on, hiding that receding hairline :)

About an hour later, the newlyweds appeared on the balcony of Buckingham palace to share their first public kiss, watched by the crowds, several of which jumped into the fountain.

Congratulations to the Happy Couple!

America's Next Top Model Cycle 16 Episode 10 Recap

The girls arrive in Morocco and the conversations that are happening on their bus ride are so funny- along with the interviews... there is so much to read into. Firstly, from the preview, it appears Alexandria will be in the bottom for her directing (more on that later) and now, typical elimination editing is giving Alexandria a lot of screen time where she talks about getting best photo last week and about her chameleon.

What's MOST fascinating is that Molly is also getting lots of screen time and she tells us how she was adopted and how this may be the cause of her anger. Then she goes and says how Tyra wants her to be completely different person and be "fake like Alexandria". OUCH. But it's true, I don't like how Tyra phrased it last week and it does seem like she's contradicting herself a few episodes back about being fake. Now, given the facts, I am pretty sure Molly is going to go home because of 1) editing 2) unrectified bad attitude 3) Alexandria will be saved for her performance.

Kasia notices camels and comments how she would love to do a photo shoot with them (she'll be pleased) and then Hannah, I think is Hannah, goes and shouts out camel toes!? LOL love her.

The girls explore the city when they see Mr and Ms Jay who tell them they will be going to all the main sites a model should see in Marrakech, before having Monkeys jump on them... Kasia then talks about herself, then Hannah talks about herself but they showed a photo of her when she was younger and the editing makes it seem like she may go home? Now I'm really confused who may be going home!

As the girls are having their traditional Moroccan lunch, Brittani talks a lot about how she has felt unsafe the last few judgings due to the whole 'Alexandria debacle' but feels strong in the competition and how she comes from a trailer park.

After lunch, the girls meet Andre and they try walk for him in designer clothes by this Moroccan/African designer- the pieces were like sculptures- very artistic... they couldn't find one which fit Kasia for a long time, but in the end, they found something. Brittani and Kasia walked well. Molly was angry looking and the dress was too long for her, whilst Alexandria didn't take her sporty socks off. Andre praised Kasia for remembering heels. I loved the cape thing on Hannah and thought her walk was stoic and appropriate!

The girls get to a rooftop and Andre is there (again) and he tells them this is their house. The girls walk into their house- there is a big bed for three and two single beds. Despite being first to walk in, Molly doesn't pick the single bed and then complains that she has to share with Brittani and Kasia. "You snooze, you lose" -wise words from Hannah. Molly complains.

Kasia: "She kind of lets her anger get the best of her and she will go home for it. *happily* So fingers crossed!"

For their photo shoot the girls will be on camels out on the Moroccan desert. Brittani was really diverse with her variety of poses, laying and standing on the camel and really sold the head scarf. Before the shoot, Molly was complaining about the heat and was faking her personality as she didn't want to come across as angry.

Molly did really well on the shoot even though all she seemed to do was to ride the camel- I did like how natural it was bit didn't feel she was diverse and her full potential. So I guess she ISN'T going home. BOO!

The photographer said that Kasia was painful to shoot so BYE BYE KASIA- love your personality- you should've entered in Cycle 10 and kicked Whitney's butt. Alexandria tries friendly chat with the photographer but he seems to be sarcastic/reject everything she says. I mean, help her out!! But LOL! She doesn't do well, Jay says she's too controlled and then when asked what she can do to break from this, she goes "to direct myself", the photographer being who he is then says "I think you're being TOO controlled". BOOM. Will she actually be going home for this or will she have a good shot? I REALLY DON'T KNOW!

At Alexandria's failure, Brittani was extremely happy with her evil Mwahahahahah's and her "Bitch, you're going down" finger spiral twirl.

Hannah was really natural on the camel and the way she jerked forward and was tense made it look great, despite the lack of clothing she had to work with. The photographer loved her and said "bravo girl" go YAY Hannah!!

From the photo shoot Alexandria and Kasia will almost definitely be in the bottom two, but will they save Kasia for her personality, or Alexandria for her past success?

At panel, Brittani got good feedback from the judges, although Franca Sozzani (from Vogue Italia) said it wasn't natural enough. Alexandria's photo was hit and miss, some good parts and some bad parts. Franca again said it looked stiff, with Nigel and Tyra both commenting on how she needed to be more aware of her attitude on set and how she would be perceived.

Kasia was criticised for thinking too much and being self conscious- Andre said it lacked narrative, Franca said it wasn't good enough, this shot being the only shot that was deemed usable by the photographer. Molly was praised by Franca for her natural looking photograph. Hannah was praised for selling the clothes and having a photo that is different to the other girls. Franca did not like her expression but Tyra praised her for her film.

At deliberation, Tyra asked if Brittani's was a must have and Andre sharply answered NO. Franca said it was contrived and constructed by the photographer and the stylist, Brittani lacking expression. Andre says Alexandria's photo is flat and Nigel comments on how her attitude is a problem and her apparent niceness seems 'fake'. NOW you see her fakeness. What happened to that in episode 7!? Franca defends Kasia's photo but wouldn't run it and also doesn't think she is a model. Nigel says that Hannah's picture lacks narrative and that she may not understand it, Andre quickly defends her and says that many great models may not necessary need to understand it to have a great shot.

I predict that Molly will get first call out, with Alexandria and Kasia in the bottom two, with Kasia being sent home. Am I right?

The first girl called is...

Ann Ward Test Shots (April 2011)

Ann has been spotted in some test shots since winning America's Next Top Model and appearing in a spread of VOGUE Italia shot by Ellen Von Unwerth. There are some nice shots here, the overexposed one of her head (top left) reminds me of her Covergirl shot where her head was almost floating.

I really like the black and white images, the one of her hunch is beautiful, though these remind me of Jane's test shots from January.

SCRE4M (Scream 4) Film Review

I have been very excited for this new Scream reboot, nervous for it as it could go pear-shaped but now that I've seen it, it is phenomenal as a reboot, in bringing back the themes of the original into the modern day and establishing itself once again in the satirical horror niche.

Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) returns to Woodsburo on her book tour when tragic killings happen once more, on the anniversary when she was first attacked fifteen years ago. With evidence discovered in her car, she becomes a suspect and is forced to stay in Woodsburo.

Giving up life as a reporter for love, Gale (Courtney Cox) craves to investigate the case with husband Dewey (David Arquette) now sheriff of Woodsburo, but when he objects, Gale goes rogue, teaming up with high school students and movie club presidents, Robbie and Charlie, to explore the new rules to the recent Ghostface killings.

Scarlett Johansson Mango Summer 2011 Campaign

Scarlett Johansson can be seen in her latest Mango campaign looking fresh, wet and sporty in a Mango vest and shorts. Many have criticised the images as having been airbrushed due to Johansson's usually curvacious figure which people claim to be missing from these shots.

Personally, she looks perfectly proportional and if they have airbrushed her, they did a good job of doing it evenly on all body parts.

This will be Scarlett's LAST Mango campaign (Noooo!) with Kate Moss apparently following Johansson to being the next Mango girl. This is a beautiful shoot so glad it ended with a bang :D

Cute Animals: Swimming Animals

If you hadn't guessed already, this month was all about animals that can be found in water (a bit obscure but...) so this week I have found a compilation of images of animals underwater- I was blown away by the beauty of the photography and the added dynamics that this medium provides to the overall effect of the photograph- it is just stunning.

Happy Easter 2011!!!

A Year has gone so quickly and it's Easter all over again-  it's weird, the sunny weather and all the birds that are flying about and the flowers blooming in my garden really have that cliched 'new life' feel to Easter.

Anyway, Just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Easter!

Gemma Arterton Elle Shoot (April 2011)

Shots of Gemma Arterton for various ELLE magazines have surfaced, looking extremely pale and spunky... the overexposed-ness doesn't really work for me- she is already really pale, this ghostly white makes her face really flat and you can hardly see her bone structure, and where you can it makes her look ill. It almost doesn't look like her in some shots- reminding me of that Rachel McAdams VOGUE Italia shoot which was unrecognisable.

There are some nice shots, but overall, the whiteness kills it. Check out the rest of the shots below:

Exuberant Cathedral for Vienna by Xin-Yu

Designed by Xin-Yu, this cathedral structure was a project designed to replace the cathedral in Vienna, exploring what it would be like "if Art Nouveau had had a greater influence and had lasted for a longer period in Vienna"?

There are some beautiful elements in this design- the fluidity of the structure and the complexity of the form. However, as much as I like the elements, the design is far too futuristic and doesn't work for the context it is being designed for. Maybe in outer space, but here on Earth, a big No.

Friends 10th Anniversary Boxset DVD Review

I received this from my friends (Thanks again guys!) for my 18th and half a year later I have finally finished the whole box set.  Friends is definitely one of my favourite TV shows ever as you can watch any episode in any order and it is still so funny.

The 10th Anniversary box set comes in a small and compact hard cardboard box which has the guys and girls stylishly printed in the iconic picture frames on either side. Lifting the lid, you can smell the plastic as all ten seasons stare at you, waiting to be picked up and watched.

Included is also a very appropriate episode guide with colourful pictures and the inclusion of props used which really add to the full on experience that this product provides- I love the pictures of the Mochalate and Science Boy comic.

Each season contains four discs, all kept in one DVD case, with artwork printed on the front, back and character portraits printed on the discs. I particularly like the individual colours on which defines the seasons, taken from the original individual season box sets.

'Friends' is a sitcom about six friends, Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross, living in New York City, their work, relationships and the hilarious day to day situations they face. The success of 'Friends' comes down to the individuality of each character and how relateable they all are.

Lasting ten seasons, each character becomes fully developed into their particular archetype and fills a social niche, which makes them perhaps the most naturally funny comedic gang. There is an obvious shift in initial portrayals of characters as Joey seemingly becomes dumber as the seasons progress, whilst Monica assumes a far less slutty (she goes out with so many guys) and more of a homey, motherly role.

Whilst the show does not assume a particular obvious direction throughout, there are general themes that are maintained from the beginning such as the advancement of the friends' careers and their progression of their individual romantic relationships, with the relationship between Rachel and Ross taking centre stage for most of the show (Were they/Weren't they on a break?!).

The show's peak was perhaps in season 4 and 5 as these two seasons contained some of the funniest episodes and some of the biggest plot twists. However, the show is extremely consistent in every season in providing shockingly hilarious episodes which makes each season unique and equally funny due to the wonderful script.

Unfortunately, the show had to come to an end, but I was very glad that it ended with a BANG as it was still very popular so the last episode was an emotional journey in itself and it did not fail to disappoint. It wraps up the story nicely, provides moments of seriousness and sadness but throws in hilarity and humour in the one hour finale which defines the series. A beautiful ending to a beautiful show.

Favourite Episodes:
The One After The Superbowl (Season 2)
The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break (Season 3)
The One with Ross's Wedding (Season 4)
The One Where Everybody Finds Out (Season 5)

The One with Rachel's Inadvertent Kiss (Season 5)
The One In Vegas (Season 5)
The One on the Last Night (Season 6)
The One with the Routine (Season 6)
The One with Rachel's Sister (Season 6)

The One with All the Cheesecakes (Season 7)
The One with the Cheap Wedding Dress (Season 7)
The One With Chandler and Monica's Wedding (Season 7)
The One with the Stain (Season 8)
The One with Rachel's Other Sister (Season 9)

The One with the Boob Job (Season 9)
The One with the Memorial Service (Season 9)
The One with the Lottery (Season 9)
The One Where Rachel's Sister Baby-Sits (Season 10)
The Last One (Season 10)

Jennifer Aniston- Rachel
Courtney Cox- Monica
Lisa Kudrow- Phoebe
Matt Le Blanc- Joey
Matthew Perry- Chandler
David Schwimmer- Ross

Maggie Wheeler- Janice
James Michael Tyler- Gunther
Paul Rudd- Mike Hannigan
Anna Faris- Erica

The show managed to pull in some pretty great guest stars which include Brad Pitt, Jason Donovan, Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin and Bruce Willis. These are my favourites:

Julia Roberts- Susie
Christina Applegate- Amy
Reese Witherspoon- Jill

With the 10th anniversay edition box set, the extra features have been seamlessly integrated into the episode discs. Most of these features come in the form of commentaries on special episodes, but there are also some trivia games, interviews and more. Unfortunately, these don't contain much more content than previous collections/discs.

Friends has to be one of the most successful sit coms ever, lasting a whole decade- still being aired in the UK regularly and making people laugh. This timeless series is original, funny and ultimately iconic, and this product houses this in a stylish and compact collection. Unfortunately, the visual bonus content has not expanded much, though it is counterracted by the sheer beauty and efficiency of this product. I eagerly wait for the 50th anniversary edition- maybe then it'd be a perfect product.
